5 Common Sewing Machine Stitch Problems & Solutions

1. Jamming Of Machine

Thread jamming is a very common problem that somehow creates mess and frustration especially when you don’t know how to fix that problem.

It happens due to some common mistakes that we commit when dealing with the top thread and bobbin thread. I will share the top three tricks to help you fix the jamming so that you can get on with your stitching.

  • Keep The Tails Long

The very first step to avoiding thread jamming is to leave a longer length on your threads. you need a decent amount of length from your both top and bobbin thread.

Beginners often make a mistake and cut them off which makes them too short. When the machine starts it draws all the thread into it and that causes jamming of your thread. So make sure to have at least 15 centimeters of length for both thread.

  • Hold The Thread Tail

The second tip to prevent your thread from jamming is to hold onto these tails when you start stitching. A little pressure on a thread stops tangling up as you begin to stitch.

Just as you start turning on the machine put your finger on both the top and bobbin thread for a successful sewing beginning.

  • Avoid Stitching At The Edges

avoid Stitching At The Edges

As a beginner, we usually start stitching at the very edges of the cloth which results in a form of jamming. that causes the needle to pull down the fabric with it and that results in knotting and jamming.

Hence for this, you need to start stitching from about 1 to 2 centimeters away from the edges.

Once you have successfully passed the 3 to 4 stitches you can go back if it requires stitching those steps at the edges

2. Breaking Of Thread Breaking Of Thread

The constant breaking of thread causes when you are using inappropriate or very low-quality thread in a sewing machine.

Always purchase thread from a quilt store because they must have quality thread spools.

Ensure that the top and bobbin threads ought to be of similar weight.

If you are using quality sewing thread and still your machine is breaking, keep the presser foot upwards when you are threading or you can bring down the tension setting to fix the top thread.

3. Uneven Stitching

Uneven Stitching

Uneven stitching is another reason that causes you trouble when sewing. Multiple reasons need to be fixed to prevent your fabric from uneven stitching.

It requires you to cross-check a few things in a machine that including again using a quality thread.

The low-grade thread may cause uneven stitching hence always make use of branded thread.

Some of us at the beginning of our stitching make the common mistake of pulling the stitching instead of permitting the fabric to be taken up by the sewing machine.

If the bobbin is not properly threaded into the case it also causes an uneven and loopy stitch.

4. Strange Noises Of The Machine

If your machine is producing unwanted noises, it indicates that you have done proper cleaning. Just like any other home appliance, sewing machines require maintenance in terms of clean-up and lubrication.

It gets dust and debris which for the time being needs to be cleaned using machine cleaning brushes.

Once you have done cleaning, the next step is to lubricate the internal components with quality machine oil and give it a test on a cycle of scrap paper before moving to the fabric.

5. Seam Puckering

Fabric puckering is a problem that seems hard to identify just at its beginning. It can be indicated only when you pull your fabric out from behind the machine.

If your machine is puckering the very first thing to be checked is your machine’s tension desk, because if you keep it high it might be causing your fabric to bunch up due to the tightness. So you should try losing the tension desk to relax the machining process.

The other thing to check is the size of the needle for example if you are sewing woven fabric with a dull needle it would ultimately start puckering the fabric. The last thing that needs to be fixed is the way you feed the fabric.

Don’t let the fabric fade on its own also don’t push and pull the fabric when passing through the feed dog. All you need to guide your fabric through the feed dog and the rest will be done accurately.

Conclusion

If you are a beginner these sewing machine stitch problems may create a mess to be dealt with intellectually.  But going through these guides to troubleshoot them will surely assist you to hold back from frustration and waste of time.
